Summer of Films

Summertime.

For most of us a synonym to holidays, for some the time of the year to roam the country and join each and every festival they can. And although I'm not the camping/wellies/pissed out drunk kind of person, I do understand that intimate connection between summer, music and festivals. Honestly I do. I just prefer to recreate it at home through the magic of movies! Bring on the cool beverages (from iced coffee/tea to beers and cocktails) and don't just stand there, push play already, we have five movies to go through!

 Dazed and Confused

You're telling me you've never watched the movie that made Matthew McConaughey's "Alright, alright, alright" quote famous? Seriously? Besides a cast that will blow your mind (they were all pretty young and during their first steps into the movie industry), the soundtrack alone will get you high, the spirit of the summer of '76 will slowly crawl under your skin and you'll experience what this movie is all about: being young, being in love, being high and being free. You may also happen to fall in love with everyone. Seriously, I couldn't pick.

 Almost Famous

Back in the day when Kate Hudson wasn't a big name (she was more famous for being her mum's daughter) and Billy Crudup was a big crush (you know, because of Sleepers) this movie had hit the charts and had stayed there for quite some time. No wonder. It's all about a boy, a Rolling Stones Magazine article, a rock band, a tour and groupies. Oh yeah, and drugs too. Another soundtrack to blow your mind, along with the proof that rock'n'roll can be "addictive" from a very young age.

 That Thing You Do

Don't judge me, I absolutely love Tom Hanks, plus "That Thing You Do" is such a catchy tune dammit! Who can find the fine line between pop and rock music back in the 60's? And to be truthful, who cares? A band that make it to the top, well almost to the top. A vain frontman, a nonchalant drummer who knows how to rock his shades, a girlfriend who deserves more, a manager who wants the top of the charts. You know how the story goes, now go watch the movie already and if by the end of it you're not singing along then I seriously don't know what's wrong with you.

 Grease

Do I even have to introduce this movie? I mean, I got chills, they're multiplying! I still remember the first time I watched it at an older cousin's house, with subtitles on because it was only a couple of years since I had started learning English. Fun times. Now it has to be watched at least once every summer.

 Blues Brothers

Yeah, I left the best for last. How many murder attempts can a guy avoid? How many cops? How great a music can he inspire? The answer is many if you're Jake Blues. But in order to succeed you need a force to put you in the right course. That's where Elwood Blues comes. It's so very hard to pick a favourite scene in this movie, but for some reason this one always makes me giggle. Plus you get Carrie Fisher (aka. Princess Leia) as the psychotic ex girlfriend, James Brown as the Reverend, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and the list goes on. Do you really need more?

Now make your self a snack, sit back and enjoy the vibe.

Until next time,

Dora
