Birchbox June 2015

What are the odds of being in a certain mood for the last month and then receiving a box that is fashionably standing besides you, fully supporting your choice? Not many, right? When Birchbox decided to partner with the ballet flats brand French Sole for the month of June I'll admit it, I couldn't erase that cheeky grin of my face. Because it's all about French Chic, ne c'est pas?

OK, OK, I knew all about the special partnership since last month but I didn't want to spoil it for you guys. Truth is all subscribers were asked to pick between three different illustrations for their boxes, "Floral Daze", "From Paris with Love" and "Pick 'n' Mix". I found myself torn between flowers and stripes, but the dictator that is my mood had already set its mind on the one. Not that Floral Daze was found lacking, after all I still believe it's absolutely gorgeous! The only one definitely not up my street was Pick 'n' Mix, although I stand by the notion of its name.

You're probably thinking by now why does it matters so much which illustration each person picked. I wish I could tell you the lifestyle item in this month's Birchbox was a pair of flats adorning that specific pattern but it's not. Close enough though. How about a shoe bag, where you can store your beautiful ballet pumps, or any other shoes of your choosing? I find the idea brilliant, especially because I hate putting my shoes into plastic supermarket bags when I pack for holidays.

Birchbox is primarily a beauty subscription box of course and I know most of you are here to see the cosmetic products of the box, correct? Without further ado, here they are!

  • Beauty Protector Protect & Oil: I've been complemented a lot on the good quality of my hair and their thickness *so very proud* but seriously ladies, it only takes a few more minutes in your regular regime to have beautiful, healthy hair as well! For example, use 1-3 drops of this Beauty Protector oil to your damp hair before you style them, working primarily from your roots to the ends. The oil protects from UV rays and heat damage and makes your hair look glossy, plus has an amazing vanilla-esque musky scent that will definitely seduce people who come close enough! I received two small vials of it to try but you can get the full size of 118ml for £16.

  • Balance Me Super Moisturising Body Wash: You know my love towards Balance Me products, I've even posted about them before (link here). Lucky me, I'm already the owner of this exact same body wash and I can rave about it for hours. You see, I have one of the oddest skin types ever. My face is way beyond oily but my body is so dehydrated to the point that I need to use extreme hydration lotions and body creams. BUT! When I use this body wash here, besides the fresh citrus smell it leaves on my skin, it also provides me with all the necessary moisturisation I so desperately need. And on top of that, Balance Me is a natural beauty company, so you won't find any parabens, sulphates, silicones and the likes in their products! Full size product, 100ml cost only £9.

  • Penhaligon's Iris Prima Perfume: OK, I'm usually happy when I receive a perfume sample, but this one just traveled me back in time and not in a good way. The description on the packaging says it's a work of olfactory choreography with Iris in the role of Prima ballerina, but all I can think is a geriatric home for ladies. Way too musky even for my liking, it has vanilla in its heart, sandalwood and bergamot for middle and top notes. It does live long on the skin but I wouldn't even touch it, way too pricey in my opinion, I would prefer to spend my money elsewhere. 50ml retail for £85.

  • Premae Mild Dermabrasion Face & Body Scrub: What is the one thing we use all the more during this time of the year? Rhetorical question, the answer is self tanning lotions of course. But what goes hand in hand with them? You guessed it right, it's scrubs. This one in particular is mild enough to use both on body and face (although the 20ml sample is barely enough to scrub one leg), with olive granules as the abrasive ingredient. 100% natural product, its slight scent reminded me of yogurt and honey. Full size comes in 100ml and retails for £25.

  • Mirenesse iCurl Secret Weapon 24Hr Mascara: How picky do you get when you have to choose a new mascara to wear? Mirenesse is an Aussie brand that uses tubing technology on its mascaras (I'm yet to fully understand what tubing tech is but anyway), promising all day long curls. After a try I can tell you it does curl and elongates, but it looked as if it simply coated my lashes. No added volume whatsoever, which is exactly what I'm looking for in a mascara. My verdict? For the pricetag of £23.97 I believe it's a waste of money, considering there are other mascaras out there who provide as much for 1/4 of the price.

Just when you thought this post came to an end, but June's Birchbox had more than the one lifestyle item inside. One I admit I don't like, as it doesn't appeal to my age at all. STYLondon's Temporary Metallic Tattoos (£7.99) are something not even my younger me would have used, so excuse me if I'm disappointed with these.

I have to say I've had much better boxes from Birchbox previously, I wasn't expected to be as let down as this. Can only hope July's box will rectify for it. If you loved it though and are considering to give it a try, then why not use my referral link for it? Click on https://www.birchbox.co.uk/invite/everythingdora and receive 50 points towards Birchbox's online shop, equivalent to £5 for you to spend! Isn't that just fine?

Until next time,

Dora
